CK SPIn Is…

HOW CK SPIN GREW

When I returned to Princeton after my pandemic gap year (I took 2020-2021 off to work, as Princeton went fully online and I wanted to maximize my time on campus) I was determined to grow the cycle program from the consistent but disconnected group it was into an excited, passionate, close community…and it’s been incredible.

TRANSFORMED THE SPACE

I personally purchased LED lights, electric candles, window shades, blacklights, and neon floor lights to transform the cycle room into the ideal space to bike. This year, I finally found a temporary solution for an instructor podium.

SPREAD THE WORD

I sent out short, funny emails to our campus listservs with the class schedule, emphasizing that newcomers were welcome, and included a form to sign-up for my email list. I posted content on my IG (me biking, the class itself, playlists for the week), which raised awareness and were shared by friends. I also encouraged riders to take pictures and tag me! People came for the first time - and would come back with friends. My email list receives a scheduled message sent out a minute before sign-up opens for each class, and is also kept up to date on themes, schedule changes, and any other announcements. Soon, groups and clubs on campus knew they could request private classes, which introduced even more new people!

ASKED FOR MORE

I successfully lobbied the gym for the purchase of new bikes and hand-weights, and worked with staff to find a permanent solution for darkness in the room (so far, stick-on shades work!) When the walk-in system wasn’t working (sometimes I would have to turn away 20+ people for classes), I requested a reservation system - which is now implemented throughout the gym.

CONTINUED INTEREST

I keep classes interesting with varied playlists and frequent theme weeks and theme rides. I carefully align my schedule with that of Princeton’s academic calendar - we ride extra hard, with excessively upbeat playlists during midterms and finals, and last year I started a tradition of “Senior Spin” week for the newly graduating class. I also frequently solicit song requests from riders, and consistently incorporate their suggestions and feedback.
